Corfe Castle - Deliberate destruction, rather than gradual decay, reduced the castle to ruins. Besieged twice by parliamentarians during the civil war, the property was eventually captured from Lady Mary Bankes in 1646, when she was betrayed by a member of her garrison. The victors set to work with explosives, ensuring Corfe could never again be used as a royalist stronghold.
